Understand the ticket before choosing
American’s Basic Economy rule allows paid seat selection and otherwise assigns a seat at check-in. If a particular row matters, compare the ticket plus selection charge with the alternatives before you buy. The fare name does not identify a separate physical Economy cabin.
Compare the aircraft shown for your flight
Start with the exact American variant and configuration, then compare Main Cabin and any separately identified Main Cabin Extra positions. Do not select an exit row merely because its color differs; read the individual exit and recline annotations.
Keep seats together deliberately
American warns that companions on the same Basic Economy ticket are not guaranteed seats together. Review its separate family seating provisions if you are travelling with children, and discuss an unresolved assignment with the airline rather than treating an unoccupied symbol as a promise.
